Blog 1

Hi and welcome to my blog. It is nothing special and pretty much just run of the mill, but read to your hearts content.

Looking at the graph of a real life situations helped me understand why the graph did what it did and how it got that way. I liked graphing a real situation and using the graph to find out info better though because it is actually useful.

FAMILIARARITIES-parabolas and linear equations are some familiar functions, if thats what you mean.

TRANSLATION- To translate a function is to move it either vertically (left or right) or horizontally (up or down) or both. A translation is when the number is being added or subtracted. If it is a vertical traslation then the number in the function is outside the paranthases. If the number in a vertical traslation is being subtracted then you move the function down. If the number is being added, then you move the function up. For a horizontal translation, the number is inside the function. If the number is being subtracted, then the function moves to the right by whatever the number is. If the number is being added in a horizontal transltion then the function moves to the right by whaterver the number is.

DILATION- To dilate a function is to change the height, the width or both on a function. On a vertical dilation the number being multilied or divided by is outside the parentheses. A vertical dilation means that the height is being changed. If the number is a less then one then the function's height is goind to shrink by that number. If the number is a bigger then one, then the height is going to grow by that number. On a horizontal dilation, the number is inside the parentheses that is being mutiplied or divided.  A horizontal dilation means the width is being changed. If the number is less then one then the function's width is going to shrink by that number. If the number is bigger than one then the width is going to grow by that number.

OVERCOMINGS- It was hard for me to determine what was a horizontal change and which was a vetical change but I relized that when it is in the parentheses it is horizontal and when it is outside the parentheses it is vertical. I was confused about when to shrink or grow on a vertical dialtion but I figured out that when it is less than one it is a shrinkage and when it is more then one it grows.

YET TO OVERCOME- The stuff we are doing with graphing f(x) and g(x) and f(g(x)) and g(f(x)) and finding the domains algebraically and the equations algebraically is really confusing. The problems are long and hard so it takes a long time to understand them, which I dont.
